Self-Care Routine
Self-care is all about finding out what energizes and relaxes me.
For me, it’s holistic—involving the mind and body.
Over the years my self-care routines have ranged from
soaking in the tub when Dad’s on deck with the kids, enjoying tea and chocolate
during my kids’ quiet time or nap, or even getting the chance to grocery shop
by myself. I’m sure other homeschool moms can appreciate shopping alone. Right?
I’ve also recognized that no matter how many relaxing
activities I make time for, contentment is not born from them alone.
This is where the “holistic” part comes in.
I’ve realized that I can feel relaxed and peaceful even when
my calendar is bursting at the seams, and there’s an endless amount of work to
be done around the house.
Why?
Because that thing that centers my world, is way bigger and
more sustaining than any number of quiet cups of coffee, or uninterrupted tub-soakings.
That thing, is knowing I’m not
fuelling my day, God is. Yes, I still fall into bed dog-tired some nights. Yes,
I don’t always feel like making lunch or dinner. But my contentment is not
dependent on the next time I get some “me” time. If that makes sense? My contentment
is knowing that the activity, the busy and full days, the responsibility, is
part of the season God has given me right now.
What do I consider “self-care” right now? Living overseas as
a homeschool mom of four kids?
Pretty basic things:
- Doing my make-up and hair
- Using shaving cream when I shave
- Making facial masks
- Painting my nails
- Making myself an iced tea (that I don’t have to share)
- Bible study
- Reading a book for 15 minutes
- Listening to a podcast
- Watching YouTube or another tv show
- Doing stretches or a quick Pilates workout
- Inviting another lady over for tea
- Taking pictures of my garden
- Having vases of fresh-cut flowers in my house
- Watercolor painting
I could go on with other very small things that can make a
big difference in the busyness of the day.
Do I do all of these all of the time? No! But I definitely
try and do some sometimes.
I'm not sure this list is what people have in their minds when I've been asked what I do for myself, or for personal enjoyment. But as simple as it sounds, painting my nails does relax me. :)
