Long rectangular tables with folding legs are difficult to find here! So this was a weekend project my husband finished right before Easter weekend, and because we already had all of the metal, paint, and wood, it cost zero dollars. Bonus!

On My Side Table

I finished Homesick My Own Story by Jean Fritz in two days. It is part of Sonlight Core F, Eastern Hemispheres, and I could hardly put it down. This story was so well told. Jean, an American, spent her early childhood in China, and her way of describing her confused feelings about longing for a country she's from, yet doesn't know at all, are so well explained. I especially loved the moment in the book where she finally sets foot on American soil for the first time in her life...

From the back of Big Truths for Young Hearts:
Equips parents to guide their young children through all major doctrines in an understandable, chapter-a-day format.Sure, it's easy to teach your children the essentials of Christian theology when you're a theology professor. But what about the rest of us?With Big Truths for Young Hearts, Bruce Ware, (you guessed it!) a theology professor, encourages and enables parents of children 6-14 years of age to teach through the whole of systematic theology at a level their children can understand. Parents can teach their children the great truths of the faith and shape their worldviews early, based on these truths. The book covers ten topics of systematic theology, devoting several brief chapters to each subject, making it possible for parents to read one chapter per day with their children. With this non-intimidating format, parents will be emboldened to be their children's primary faith trainers-and perhaps learn a few things themselves along the way.
I like this systematic theology book because it pairs so well with the catechism questions that we've been doing together since September.

Sing the Word: All Nations Shall WorshipI feel like there are too many choices for us right now when it comes to reading Bible together. Between New City Catechism, Sing the Word for Bible memory, The Action Bible, and of course just reading our Bibles together! The kids really like the Action Bible because we have the audible narrative as well. This year, we've kind of been doing a mixture of everything. On days I feel like the kids need something lighter, we listen to the Action Bible together. Those days where I feel like I have their attention, we read Big Truths for Young Hearts, and they all like taking turns reading, so we'll try to go through a New Testament book together (Mark) chapter by chapter. We can't do everything everyday, of course, but I do like listening to the songs everyday, and then choosing some kind of reading together.
