Leaving the Plateau
Shortly before Christmas, and all through January, my middle son would try anything to get out of practicing piano. In fact, every time he sat down for his lesson, or to practice, it became an emotional experience. :( Working on the same song, for what seemed like forever, he had definitely hit a plateau. However, I didn't really detect it. I thought it was some sort of testing, or laziness, or something... As we were walking through this struggle, I did consider that maybe he wasn't meant to continue with music lessons. He talked about switching to guitar. He tried his hand at our ukulele for a bit. I still wasn't willing to let him quit piano just yet though.
We have been using Hoffman Academy for our piano lessons for the past year, and I couldn't recommend it more! My kids love it; they're learning to read music, and improvise. They are learning basic musical theory, and the videos make it so fun!
And I'm so thankful he didn't quit! Whatever plateau he was stuck on, he has soared off of it. It has been amazing to watch him whiz through lessons and I can see that concepts are just "clicking" with him now. He's actually sitting down to the piano for fun on a daily basis, which is so awesome. In fact, everybody seems to be playing the piano more and more in their spare time.
