Grace, A License to Obey

For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace?

By no means!

Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

Romans 6:14-18

I know there are people who hesitate with the grace message. If we tell people they've been saved by grace, and there's grace for everything, isn't that like giving people a license to sin? This hesitation isn't new. The leaders of the early church questioned Paul on it too! And his response was recorded in Romans Chapter 6. Paul talks about how we have died with Christ. Our old sinful nature has been put to death, and we have been raised with new life in Christ Jesus. It is now Christ living in us!

Grace is not a license to sin, on the contrary it is a license to obey.

Because of grace, we have the Spirit of God working in us. We are God's children.
Victory over sin is Christ's death on the cross. Victory over sin doesn't mean that we will attain perfection in this life on earth. But we have victory over sin because the punishment has been paid and we are no longer under condemnation for our sin. We can live victoriously, no longer a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness because of the new nature God has given us by His Spirit living within us. Thank you Jesus!
